Paul Coopersmith in Memory of Frank DeLorenzo Memorial Fund

The Frank DeLorenzo Memorial Scholarship Fund celebrates the life of Frank DeLorenzo, who, to my mind, was the most creative member of the Leonia High School Class of 1964. His playful illustrations enlivened the yearbook and The Leonian. While a fifth-grader at Anna C Scott elementary school, Frankie wrote what would soon become the school’s official song—the same uplifting words and melody that are still sung at ACS, over sixty years later. His wide-ranging artistic talents, coupled with an inimitable, buoyantly mischievous sense of humor, made him an inspiration to all who knew him. It is Frankie’s spirit, his love of life as well as his aesthetic agility, that we are honoring with this award, to be given on an annual basis to the LHS senior who best demonstrates talent and ambition as an artist, musician, or writer.

Congratulations to Leonia High School graduate, Evelyn Um, on being named the Fund’s sixth recipient.  She plans to attend Oberlin College and the Oberlin Conservatory and study violin performance. During high school, she served in several leadership positions, including Co-President of Vox Angelica, and Co-Concertmaster of the Leonia High School Orchestra. In addition, she was a member of the Leonia High School String ensemble, senior member of the Chamber Choir, and a crew member of the Limelighters. Among her volunteer activities, she assisted the high school’s music department as a student officer and a senior extern.
