COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund

Northern New Jersey Community Foundation COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund

No Donation is Too Small.

During this unparalleled time, the Northern New Jersey Community Foundation (NNJCF) is even more passionate in our mission to serve the communities in Northern New Jersey. The COVID-19 pandemic is more than a health crisis. The pandemic has direct economic impact on individuals, communities, and local organizations across Northern New Jersey. In answer to the question, ‘What can we do together, that we can’t do alone?,’ NNJCF created the COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund to pool resources from donors of all sizes to address the immediate financial impact on grassroots organizations providing services to residents throughout Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic, and Union Counties.

About the Fund

NNJCF launched the COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund to provide immediate resources to vetted small nonprofit organizations with limited budgets serving vulnerable populations in Bergen County. In May, the fund was expanded to include Essex, Hudson, Passaic, and Union Counties. Many of these small local nonprofits are faced with difficult financial choices about whom to serve and how. Local residents face increased struggles because of reduced or lost income, food and housing insecurity, health expenses and childcare needs. Additionally, social distancing is causing increased isolation and loneliness among community members. The Fund will also support nonprofit arts organizations and those providing arts programs and services in the county to build community engagement in a time of isolation. Nonprofit arts organizations providing services to populations such as artists experiencing loss of income resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic will also be considered for support.

NNJCF made initial grants to 54 organizations in Bergen County. The next round of funding will be made available to 501c3 nonprofits that have not already applied to the fund in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union Counties. Applications will open in late June.

Your donation will have greater impact through this pooled fund and ensure the most pressing needs of our community are addressed.  Donations are tax-deductible, as permitted by law, and may be made online at COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund.  Contributions may also be sent by check made out to ‘The Northern NJ Community Foundation’, with the COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund entered in the memo line, to: The Northern New Jersey Community Foundation, 1 University Plaza, Suite 128, Hackensack, New Jersey 07601.

Funding Criteria

Many small non-profit organizations are struggling to continue to serve their community, while more residents turn to them for support.  The NNJCF COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund works to address immediate financial needs of grassroots 501(c) (3) so they can adapt to changing conditions, while continuing to serve our neighbors throughout Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic, and Union Counties.  These small local organizations lack the networks and name recognition to access statewide and national funds.

The priority of the NNJCF COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund is to provide one-time small-scale financial support grants to eligible organizations working to meet the immediate needs of Northern New Jersey residents.  Priority will be given to organizations with  limited budgets facing extreme challenges due to lost revenue and modification of how services are delivered.  These grants are NOT intended to support organizations with large operating budgets or endowed funds. Organizations that applied for funding in the first round are not eligible to apply again.

Information about the grant making and application process will be posted online in the coming weeks.
