ARTSBERGEN ANNOUNCES A CALL FOR ARTISTS

Artists Wanted for Creative Hackensack’s
“The Utility ARTBox Project”

The Hackensack Creative Arts Team (CAT) of the Main Street Alliance, the Hackensack Cultural Arts Department, and ArtsBergen are seeking five artists and/or artist teams to design and paint murals on five utility boxes in the City of Hackensack, NJ.

 

INTRODUCTION

The Hackensack Creative Arts Team (CAT) is a group of artists, merchants, organizational leaders and public officials working to implement a creative placemaking plan for the City of Hackensack. Creative placemaking is the integration of arts and culture into a neighborhood, town, or region to build community and livability and boost local economy. The CAT has identified a number of projects that will move forward the Creative Vision Statement it has drafted with the input of various members and sectors of the community. The Utility ARTBox is one such project.

PROJECT GOALS

  • To create public awareness of the negative effects of littering through public art.
  • To beautify the community of Hackensack by incorporating public art into ordinary elements of the city, like utility boxes.
  • To provide art-based work opportunities for local artists that celebrate their work via public showcases.
  • To engage and delight passersby and residents.
  • To endorse arts and culture as a powerful tool to transform, connect, and serve the city of Hackensack.

PROJECT LOCATION AND SCOPE OF WORK

Five utility boxes have been selected for this project. See dimensions and locations below.  The Utility ARTBox Project is funded in part by a Clean Communities Grant, with a primary focus on litter prevention. Therefore, each box will serve as a canvas for a painted mural that illustrates a clear message of anti-littering / litter prevention / how littering damages a community and how anti-littering behavior betters a place.The incorporation of elements that engage the public is encouraged.
A total of 5 artists/artist teams will be selected. Each artist/artist team will be assigned a box to design and paint his/her vision.

ESTIMATED TIMELINE (subject to change)

Applications Due: April 17, 2017
Artist Selections: May 12, 2017
Painting Begins: May 30, 2017
Project Completion: by end of June 2017

ArtsBergen is collecting submissions of interested applicants. Artists must be at least 18 years of age to apply and either work or live in New Jersey.Artists will be selected by a selection committee based on creativity of design, experience, artistic excellence, and how clearly the theme of litter prevention is communicated.

Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.Artists will be notified only if his/her design is selected.

  2. Upload Color Rendering of your Suggested Design.
  3. Upload Up to 2 Jpeg Images from your Portfolio.
  4. Optional: Upload Resume/CV or A. Printed Application Form found in this packet.

 DESIGN CRITERIA

  • Artwork must be original.
  • Designs must illustrate a clear message of anti-littering / litter prevention / how littering damages a community and how anti-littering behavior betters the city. Designs can be exclusively imagery, representational or abstract, and/or include written messaging.
  • The Clean Communities logo must be incorporated into all designs.
  • Avoid large blocks of dark color to prevent boxes from overheating.
  • No profanity | No copyrighted material/characters | Nosubliminal or foreground depictions of nudity |No depictions of vulgar or lewd symbols, acts, or hand gestures from any culture, both ancient and modern.

COMPENSATION:

Each selected artist/artist team will receive recognition, design credit, and $500.00.*This fee includes the cost of all supplies and attendance at planning meetings.

Established in 2004, the Hacknsack Main Alliance is a public private partnership betweenthe business community and the City of Hackensack.
